Hear or see an animal called worms sometimes make people angry. But who would have thought, this disgusting animal that can actually help avoid infection seseseorang.

A new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases found that the use of maggots to treat wounds without increasing the risk of new infections.

As quoted in WebMD,Works by maggots eat dead tissue (debridement) in the wound that may increase the risk of infection.

This treatment can help reduce the risk of infection, and after the surgery, because the worms are supposed to be able to eliminate a substance that can fight infection.

This technique is known as a worm debridement therapy (MDT) which has existed since the 1920s as a treatment for bone and tissue infections. While research is now conducted to demonstrate the safety and benefits of this therapy.

DTM technique using sterile maggots are kind sericata Phaenica, worms are placed on the injured twice a week and left for 48-72 hours.

Maggot inserted into the wound they eat dead tissue, but still allowing the living tissue remain intact. Currently there is concern whether the worms are used disinfectant because it can worsen an existing infection in the wound.

Researcher Ronald A. Sherman and Kathleen J. Shimoda conducted a study to evaluate and see the safety and effectiveness of larval therapy. This study involved 143 patients who were analyzed between the years 1990-1995. The study shows that the wound has a worm in the small possibility of infection compared with untreated wounds with maggots.

Also in the 10 wounds treated with maggots, were not infected. While six of the 19 patients who were not infected with maggot therapy after surgery, as well as wound closure even more complicated.

Besides helping to prevent infection of wounds, larval therapy is also useful to overcome the pain in the nerves of the leg, eliminating non-traumatic injuries and wound healing after surgery.

This therapy is quite safe, because in spite of maggot therapy is not working as expected, this treatment will not hurt a person. However, this therapy is only used when the use of antibiotics or surgery done can not give positive results or a maximum.

A study by researchers at the University of Manchester found that 12 of the 13 patients with MRSA infection, obtain wound healing in the use of larval therapy. Whereas the virulence of staph is infecting the body does not work for some types of antibiotics.
